Celebrating Sandy: Hurricane brought Morristown kindergarteners together

Hurricane Sandy left much destruction in its wake. Many local schools suffered damage so severe that it left children without a place to learn for several days. The Morris School district took action by combining students from several schools that had major damage with those that hadn’t suffered from Sandy’s wrath.

The Hillcrest Avenue School joined the Alfred Vail School combining kindergarten through second grade. Two kindergarten classes made what we hope to be lifelong friendships.

Ms. Harris and Ms. Chang’s kindergarten classes spent three days working together to bring back some normalcy after the terrible storm.

They worked together, played together, shared a classroom together and things ran so smoothly that the teachers decided to plan a special treat for the youngsters, a post-Thanksgiving breakfast to celebrate new friendships, which was held at the Original Pancake House on Route 10 in Whippany, on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2012.

The children and parents were invited to join together and celebrate their new-found friends with a pancake feast!

Everyone was excited to see his or her new friends. All the children made a special Thanksgiving speech, each contributing a line or two. They were joined by two surprise guests, Morristown First Lady Mary Dougherty, and Magician Bob, who delighted the children with fantastic magical tricks including a beautiful live white dove! A great time was had by all!

A special thank you to Ms. Harris and Ms. Chang for organizing such a wonderful event and a very special thank you to the Original Pancake House for hosting all of these wonderful children!
