Santa Claus arrived Sunday in Morristown to squeals of delight from a throng of children, who waited anxiously below the Century 21 department store for Morristown firefighters to lower their hero from the rooftop.
Mayor Tim Dougherty warmed up the kids, leading them in Santa cheers.
Once safely on terra firma, Kris Kringle led a countdown that ended with the Morristown Green bathed in Christmas colors.
And then the jolly old elf made his way past adoring fans to the Santa House, where he will have visiting hours for the next four weekends.
The Christmas Festival at the Morristown Green, which will include electric train rides and other fun activities, is organized by the Morristown Partnership. This is the 99th year that Christmas has been commemorated on the Green.
This also was the first time in memory that Santa has arrived on Sunday, a school night. In years past, Santa’s triumphal return was on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. Century 21 asked to push back the event this year, so it would not conflict with Black Friday shopping.
