Greater Morristown offers abundant cultural options this weekend, and they seem even more appealing after the long ordeal of a hurricane that turned New Jersey upside-down.

THURSDAY, NOV. 15, 2012:

Join the Morristown & Morris Township Library and Vogue contributing editor Robert Sullivan at 7 pm for a journey through American independence as seen through his book, My American Revolution. Sullivan highlights the importance of New York and New Jersey in the fight for independence, including the famous crossing of the Delaware, and the parts of the war that were fought right in our own backyards. The talk, My American Revolution: Crossing the Delaware and I-78, is free and refreshments will be served. Copies of Sullivan’s book will be available for purchase. The library is at 1 Miller Road in Morristown.

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Dr John & The Lower 911 meet up with five-time Grammy Award winners Blind Boys of Alabama for a night of Spirituals to Funk at 8 pm at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. FRIDAY, NOV. 16:

Stop by from 6 pm to 8 pm at Morristown’s Simon Gallery for a reception for artist Reese Inman, whose works are on display at 48 Bank St. through Dec. 15. Call 973 538-5456 for more information.

Do you miss NHL hockey during the labor lockdown?  Get your fix at 7 pm at Mennen Arena in Morris Township, where New Jersey Devils alumni will face off against Colonials coaches in a benefit for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids. Please bring a can of nonperishable food (for local food banks, not for hurling at referees). Mennen is at 161 East Hanover Ave.

Morristown High School presents its fall musical, Heaven Can Wait, at 7:30 pm. Tickets: $10. The show also runs on Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 2 pm, in the high school auditorium, at 50 Early St. For more information call 973-292-2000 ext 3733.

Duo Rich Prezioso and Jacquie Manning come to The Minstrel as Small Potatoes with opener Matthew Broady at 8 pm. Self-proclaimed “Eclecto-Maniacs, ” Prezioso and Manning describe their musical talents as ranging from Celtic to western with a twist of individuality thrown in. Matthew Broady returns after a well-recieved performance at the Folk Project Spring Festival earlier this year. Admission: $7 for adults, children under 12, free. Bob Dylan once called Smokey Robinson America’s “greatest living poet,” and the Mayo Performing Arts Center presents an evening with the poet himself at 8 pm. Robinson will perform selections from more than 50 years of Motown hits, and will share personal stories from his legendary career and take questions from the audience. SATURDAY, NOV. 17:

Bring your recyclables to the Woman’s Club of Morristown between 9 am and 3 pm, and help a myriad of worthy causes.   Items that are sought range from Campbell’s soup labels and beverage pop-tops to gently used clothing and suitcase, art supplies, fabric, yarn and eyeglasses. The club is at 51 South St.

The 13th annual Brookside Community Club Boutique runs from 9 am to 3:30 pm at the Brookside Community Club, across from the Brookside Post Office on Main Street in Mendham Township. Admission is free. Items include doll clothes, blankets, jewelry and more.

 NaNoWriMo has kicked off–that’s author-speak for National Novel Writing Month–and the Morristown & Morris Township Library wants to help you get started on your Great American Novel with a write-in from 2 pm to 4 pm. Gather with other budding novelists to brainstorm, share resources, and swill some much-needed coffee. Space is limited, so registration is required. Please contact Barbara Gordon at 973-538-2592.

The Mayo Performing Arts Center presents the Ron White: Moral Compass Tour at 7 pm. Ron “Tater Salad” White smokes cigars, drinks scotch, and brings a politically incorrect spin to “Blue Collar Comedy.” Mature content, language. Adults only. Tickets $47-$97. Call 973-539-8008 for more details.

Imperial Brass brings its 28-piece band to the Morristown United Methodist Church at 7:30 pm. The concert will feature compositions by Erik Leidzen, Sir Dean Goffin, Philip Sparke, J.S. Bach, Leroy Anderson and others.  Suggested donation: $20 for adults and $15 for senior citizens.  Advance tickets  ($17 adults/$12 seniors) are available by calling 973-538-2132.  Students with ID are admitted Free. The church is on the Green at 50 Park Place.

John Sebastian, of Lovin’ Spoonful fame, plays at the Sanctuary series in Chatham at 8 pm. This show is sold out; if there are cancellations, tickets will be sold at the door an hour before the concert. Admission: $25. The Sanctuary is in the Presbyterian Church at 240 Southern Boulevard. SUNDAY, NOV. 18:

Hard to believe, but the Morristown Farmers Market winds down for 2012 on Sunday.  Bid a happy winter to your favorite vendors from 8:30 am to 2 pm. Everything is in Parking Lot 10, between Morris Street and Dumont Place.

Roman Rabinovich won the 2008 Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, and has been praised by critics for his “vivacity and virtuosity” as well as his “impeccable clarity of execution.” He comes to the Concert Hall at Drew University at 3 pm for a 90-minute concert. Come early for the pre-concert chat at 2:15. The University is at 36 Madison Ave. in Madison.

Carrie Fellows will present Fashions in the Age of Austen, an exploration of women’s fashion from 1790 – 1817 at the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum at 4:30 pm. The talk by the museum’s executive director is presented in conjunction with the exhibit in the School Room Gallery, showcasing textiles from throughout history, including rugs, porcelain, silver, glass and furniture collected by Museum founder W. Parsons Todd. Adults $8 for this event, seniors and students $6, children 6-12 $4, members and children under 5 are free. The Museum is at 45 Macculloch Ave. in Morristown.

Morristown’s Sunday Night Portrait Drawing Sessions have returned to ArtSpace at 14 Elm Street. Sessions run from 6 pm to 9 pm and feature live models and camaraderie for $10.
