Giving thanks, post-Sandy, for the Morristown Green family

Many people served valiantly in the long days after Hurricane Sandy. Police, firefighters, public works crews, town officials and employees, churches and volunteers . . . the list is long.

thank you to mg contributorsAnd it’s not complete without a huge post-hurricane thank you to the dedicated contributors to MorristownGreen.com.

Like everyone else, they struggled with power outages, chilly homes and travel disruptions, and the challenges that these obstacles posed to their families and jobs.

Yet these selfless volunteers continued to post stories, photos, videos and updates to MG, to help keep their neighbors informed throughout the ordeal.

Sharon Sheridan, our MG Kids editor, provided invaluable editing assistance and coverage of the remarkable public meal service at St. Peter’s in Morristown–while soldiering on at home without electricity for nearly two weeks.

Berit Ollestad introduced readers to linemen from Ohio, motorists in Pennsylvania gas lines and many others–while helping organize a local relief effort for storm victims at the Shore.

Beth Kujan was like the great pinch-hitter so essential to every winning team: Filing school updates, posting storm photos, even taking dictation over the phone like the legendary newspaper re-write people of yesteryear.

Marie Pfeifer had to hunt for a computer with power, and hunt she did, to file a timely election feature. (Whose idea was it to schedule an election during a hurricane, anyway?)

Emulating his hero, 19th-century Morristown illustrator Thomas Nast, Paul Laud churned out masterful cartoons by lantern light.

Katrina Langer pitched in to make sure we still had our Weekend Previews–alerting shivering readers to some warm and cheery entertainment options to punctuate the gloom.

Bill Lescohier’s trusty camera took the measure of the Nor’easter for MG.  Readers also helped document the  damage from a hurricane that in time is likely to grow to a Category 5 in the re-telling, despite everyone’s best efforts to forget the whole thing.

We also received many kind offers of places to warm up, recharge our batteries, grab a bite and file stories.

To all of these fine people–and to all the good folks who my foggy brain has failed to mention–thank you for your spirit, your passion and your commitment.  It’s such a privilege to share this space with you.

  1. Morristown and its residents made me and my husband proud. Our Town showed how they could work together for the benefit of all. I was amazed at how many smiles I saw throughtout the whole ordeal and how many people, including Kevin. contacted us to make sure we were OK. Wendell and I say thank you to you all.
