Can Morristown’s bars co-exist peacefully with local businesses and neighborhoods?

That was among the topics that local residents, officials and business people tackled Friday morning, at the kickoff of Creative Morristown at the Hyatt Morristown.

The conference, which runs through Saturday afternoon, was organized by Sustainable Morristown, the Arts Council of the Morris Area, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and Creative New Jersey.

About 80 people from various walks of life came out on a rainy Friday, invited by the organizers to invite anyone they thought might be interested in sharing ideas.

It’s a free-form event, where the participants select the discussion topics.

The framework for the gathering is this central question:

“How can our diverse community engage creativity and innovation to ensure a thriving and sustainable Morristown?”

In the bar discussion, suggestions included creating cultural events for young people as alternatives to drinking, earlier closing times for bars, and having a town-wide summit to find ways for bars to thrive while minimizing the problems associated with drunken patrons.

Another session pondered how to help Morristown families in need. Stay tuned for more…
