The cause of a reported manhole explosion in Morristown on Thursday evening is not yet known. But a spokesman for Jersey Central Power & Light said nobody in the vicinity had lost power.

“We’ll assess what happened. Nobody is out of light. We’ll get crews out there,” spokesman Gerry Ricciardi said shortly before 8 pm.

JCP&L got a report of the sidewalk incident, near the corner of Washington and Bank streets, at 6:20 pm, he said.  A special crew that deals with manhole issues was en route, he said.

No injuries were reported at the busy intersection, according to Acting Fire Chief Robert Flanagan.

“It was very lucky,” he said.

Police blocked off Washington between Court and Bank streets immediately after the incident. A manhole cover appeared to be dislodged on the sidewalk along Washington.  The chief said this explosion differed from others downtown in that there was no smoke or heat.
