She thinks she may be the only native Oklahoman with a degree from Juilliard. We can’t verify that…but when Sharel Cassity has a sax in her hands, the claim sure sounds valid.

Sharel, whose ancestry includes Commanche and Irish blood, performed on the Morristown Green with Mauricio de Souza and Bossa Brasil on July 10 as part of the Music Without Borders series sponsored by the Arts Council of the Morris Area and the Mayo Performing Arts Center.

Area jazz fans will recognize bassist Gary Mazzaroppi, who performed for years with legendary guitarist Les Paul and more recently has played with a future legend, Frank Vignola.

Keyboard and trumpet duties were handled by Alan Chaubert–who actually is Swiss.  The only authentic Brazilian of the bunch, drummer Mauricio de Souza, chose a set featuring pieces by Tom Jobim, Egberto Gismonti and Hermeto Pascoal.

This piece, entitled Bebȇ, is by Hermeto Pascoal.

The remaining two lunchtime concerts in the free series are:

JULY 24: Red Hawk Native American Arts Council Dance Troupe (Native American music and dance)

AUGUST 7: Barynya (Russian Music and Dance)
