Cancer has ravaged his voice. His legs don’t work so well, either. But fortunately, Bob Tracey’s olfactory equipment was intact on the Fourth of July.

The World War II Navy veteran got to smell the roses when Veterans Park in Morristown was renamed the J. Robert Tracey Veterans Memorial Park.

A big crowd of family, friends and dignitaries braved Wednesday’s oppressive heat to thank the retired Morristown postmaster for decades of service on behalf of veterans.  It’s almost impossible to imagine Memorial Day or Veterans Day on the Green without a fiery speech by Bob Tracey.

Bob, 87, told our MG Kids correspondent, Alyse Jefferson, that he was “ecstatic” about the park honor.  You can see his joy in this video.

He extended thanks to virtually everyone he’s ever met. We edited those remarks because we, of course, are the ones who owe him–and his fellow servicemen and women from WWII and the Korean War (he served in the Army!)– our gratitude.

Our turn to salute you, Bob.

Plans for the park include a gazebo and other improvements. Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty said donations may be sent c/o town Administrator Michael Rogers at Morristown town hall, 200 South St., 07960.
