Ever wonder where all the nice kids are these days? Last week you did not have to look any farther than the Morristown High School cafeteria.

About 50 or so students and 130 senior citizens from area senior centers and nursing homes shaked, rattled and rolled to such timeless classics such as the Twist, the Cha-Cha and old time rock and roll at the 14th annual Intergenerational Prom.

“We teach our kids to respect seniors because we all will be there eventually,” said event coordinator Nancy Black, mom of MHS sophomore Jordy Black.

The prom is a joint venture of area businesses, the MHS Parent Advisory Committee and the Morris Educational Foundation, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary on May 20 at the high school.

Morristown Councilman Stefan Armington brought his whole family to show his support. In addition to being fun, he said, “it is a great way for my boys, ages 12 and 14, to learn about the history of the community first-hand from the seniors.”

The prom king and queen were crowned mid-way through the evening, chosen for their tireless energy and spirit. Dottie Rubino was Prom queen, and her king was the exuberant Bob Karnai.

High school student David Birmingham got caught up in the spirit of the night.

“I enjoy being here because it’s always a lot of fun and not to mention, my mom is on the board for the event,” he said.

Senior citizens were treated to a gift bag full of goodies as well as leftovers from the evening’s meal to take home with them.
