Here is the press statement from the clerk’s office:

MORRIS CLERK WARNS OF DEED SCHEME

Morris County Clerk Joan Bramhall is warning property owners to beware of people who try to sell them a certified copy of the deed to their property.

“It’s come to my attention that businesses are soliciting property owners in Morris County and offering to sell them a copy of their deed for $69.50,” Bramhall said. “Don’t be fooled by these offers. You can readily obtain a certified copy of your deed from my office for $10 for the first page and $1 for each additional page.”

She also warns property owners to be wary of anyone purporting to sell “actual” deeds.

“The County Clerk’s office is the only official keeper of these deeds,” Bramhall said. “My office is responsible for recording, filing and preserving all property transactions that occur within the county.”

Bramhall said a property owner should keep his or deed stored safely with other important documents.

“If a deed is misplaced, however, a property owner can obtain a certified copy from my office,” Bramhall said. “There is no need to use a middle man who is charging an exorbitant fee for this service.

More information about obtaining a copy of a deed may be obtained online from the County Clerk’s website, www.morriscountyclerk.com, or by calling the office at 973-285-6747.
