Mills Street residents report early morning gunshots

Amanda Power was awakened at about 1 am Wednesday by four loud noises outside her Mills Street home in Morristown.

“There was a pop, followed by a pop-pop-pop.”

Amanda told her husband she thought it was gunfire. Police responded quickly to the scene, she said, blocking off a portion of Mills Street.

“Police said they found four shells near the house,” she said.

Police confirmed there was gunfire and urged residents to remain vigilant, but stressed that there was nothing to suggest that “any particular place, person or thing was targeted.”

According to a statement from the police, residents reported “seeing a light colored sedan traveling south on Mills Street at a high rate of speed.  As per the residents, it appeared that one of the occupants of the vehicle was possibly firing a weapon as the vehicle continued south.”

A Mills Street resident, who asked that his name be withheld, said he heard the same four pops.

“I thought a bunch of kids were throwing firecrackers out the window,” said the man, who then heard “two or three more” shots farther down Mills Street, heading south towards Washington Street.

“I was surprised it was gunfire,” the man said.

Police Captain Steve Sarinelli said there were no reports of any injuries. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 973-538-2200.

Amanda said she did not see anyone when she looked out her window after hearing the pops. She and other residents said they were unaware of anything being hit by the shots. As a mom who has lived in the neighborhood for eight years, Amanda said the incident makes her a little nervous.

In December 2009, a home on nearby Speedwell Place was riddled with bullets from a semi-automatic handgun in a case that was not solved.
