Vice President Joe Biden cited the Obama administration’s record on national security, gradual gains in the economy and the comeback of the auto industry at a fundraiser for Sen. Robert Menendez in Morris Township on Monday, said Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty, who attended the invitation-only event.

The Vice President also stressed the Senator’s role on the Senate banking and foreign relations committees.

“We need that kind of experience back in Washington,” Biden said, according to the Mayor.

Mayor Dougherty estimated more than 100 people attended the $1,000-per-person event, on the Old Glen Road “Sunnymede” estate of Barbara and Philip Sellinger.

It started at 5 pm, and the Vice President stayed for nearly two hours, according to the Mayor, who had a brief chance to greet Biden.

“It’s an experience I will take with me for a long time,” said the Mayor, whose only regret was that his wife Mary, who is Morristown’s Democratic chairwoman, could not attend because of an illness in her family.

He estimated that the Senator and Vice President each spoke for 15- to 20 minutes. Sen. Menendez emphasized his works on behalf of women’s rights, and his support of the Recovery Act, the Mayor said.
