A two-story plunge in a Morristown elevator back in 2005 was worth $3.78 million to a Branchville carpenter and his wife, who were awarded the damages in Superior Court this week, reports the Daily Record.

Richard Tufaro, now 58, had been working on a job at Headquarters Plaza and entered elevator H-4 en route to the parking garage below.

The elevator malfunctioned, stopping abruptly and slamming the man, laden with heavy carpentry gear, against the elevator wall, injuring his back, knee, shoulder and urinary system, the newspaper reports.

Schindler Corp., the elevator company, acknowledged liability, according to the newspaper. The jury verdict, delivered Tuesday to Superior Court Judge Daniel Coburn, awarded $2.8 million to Richard Tufaro for “pain, suffering, disability and loss of enjoyment of life,” the paper said. The rest went for medical bills and to the man’s wife for the effect of her husband’s injuries on her life.
