Who killed Mary Ruth? That’s what the patrons at the Morristown Deli tried to find out over dinner on Saturday night.

The cast of four from Without a Cue Productions LLC was great. “They were funny and passionate. They make people enjoy the show and are always in character,” said Kevin Dunn from Somerville. Lauren Thatcher, also from Somerville, said she was looking for something different to do and found this online.  “I’d definitely come back,” she said.

The evening drew 84 guests. “I had to turn people away,” said Debbie Marowitz, owner of the Morristown Deli. “I had this idea as I wanted to bring something different to a Saturday night.”

The crowd was mixed with small and large tables, including a table of nine for Yara Linares of Manville who was celebrating her birthday with her girlfriends.

In addition to all the people, the crowd included one very special puppy. Kandy, a seeing eye puppy in training, was with Janet Keeler of Irvington. Janet and her friend Carmella Passaro are leaders of the group “Eyes for Hope” out of Essex County. Janet said Marc of the Morristown Deli always is generous in allowing them into the deli with the puppies when they bring them to Morristown on their “club trips.”

My husband Tim, who is Morristown’s mayor, and I gathered with 17 friends to enjoy the evening.

“We are happy to celebrate the first Murder Mystery Night at the Morristown Deli. It’s a great night in Morristown where people from all over come to enjoy the show,” Tim said.

“I made a promise to myself that I would try different things . . . I love murder mysteries and suspense,” said Vera White. Dorothy Holman said she came out  “to try something different and fun.”

Rhea Cavanaugh, who was joined by her husband Jimmy and daughter Emily, said she “loves solving mysteries.”

Also celebrating her birthday was Carol Glennan of Lebanon. Carol enjoyed the evening with her sister Paige and their husbands. Paige saw the flyer while having lunch at the Morristown Deli and thought it would be fun.

The night was filled with a lot of laughs and great food.

Who found our murderer?? Debbie Rice from Florham Park, who spent her Saturday night on a date with her husband Steve. Congratulations, Debbie!

Mary Dougherty is Morristown’s Democratic chairwoman, and is married to Mayor Tim Dougherty. If you couldn’t make it to this Murder Mystery Night, don’t despair. Marc Marowitz of the Morristown Deli says more dinner theater is likely… think ‘Love Boat,’ and maybe a children’s performance.
