My daughter and I have scheduled an “island getaway” for March 4.   And we won’t have to drive or fly.

The Morris School District Community School is offering a bus trip to the Philadelphia Flower Show of 2012 at thePhiladelphia Convention Center, where the flowers of the Hawaiian  Islands will be on display.  Here’s how MSD Community School describes it:

On entering the show, visitors will immediately experience motion graphics designed to simulate the ocean floor with waves crashing overhead.

There will be a 25-foot (real) waterfall, thousands of orchids and other tropical plants, four showcase exhibits depicting Hawaii cowboy culture, a destination beach wedding, “the hula as inspiration,” a fancy surfers’ retreat, and a “rocky garden of the gods.”

Even though the show will be occurring in winter, the flower show will be like a warm tropical getaway, with exhibits of floral volcanoes, cut-bamboo designs, surf shacks, Hawaiian vistas, and a tribute to the memorial garden at Pearl Harbor.

Featuring:

  • Competitions by landscape and floral designers.
  • Free lectures and demonstration on topics such as lei making and quilting, green roofs and walls, organic gardening, vegetables, edible landscapes, native plants, tree and lawn care and ornamental horticulture.
  • Hula, music, and fire dancing performances.
  • Family lounge with children’s activities.

The bus departs at 8 am and returns at 5 pm, the from Frelinghuysen Middle School The cost is $68.  To register, call 973- 292-2063 or visit www.msdcommunityschool.org.

*Lunch is available for purchase at the show.*
