Morristown’s First Lady to seniors: Let them eat cake!

It should be safe to go out two weeks after your birthday, right?

Not if you’re Morristown’s First Lady, evidently.

Some friends conspired to surprise Mary Dougherty with a party on Thursday at the Ann Street seniors center.

“We do it because we love her. She’s good, and she deserves it,” said Vera White, one of the ringleaders, who organized the birthday buffet with Dorothy Holman, Donna Howard and Belinda Alston.

Mary thought she was going out for a bite with her husband, Mayor Tim Dougherty, and a friend.

“What wonderful people. What a great group to celebrate my birthday with,” said Mary, who had been in Boston on business for her actual birthday, Feb. 8.

The seniors who sat down for fried chicken, potato salad and strawberry-filled vanilla cake seemed pretty happy, too, all things considered.

“I hate being old,” said Ann Street resident Andora Hale. “But it beats being anywhere else.”
