Thursday couldn’t come soon enough for anxious children who filed into the Woodland School gym with heavy pockets full of change.

A pep rally that included the Morristown High School cheerleading squad and the Thomas Jefferson School band helped kick off the ninth annual Coins for a Cause fund-raiser that ultimately will benefit a community organization in Greater Morristown.

Coins for a Cause allows children to see first-hand how they can make a difference simply by voting. This year, The Seeing Eye, The Morristown Neighborhood House and The Interfaith Food Pantry are competing for the kids’ votes.

The organizations will be given an opportunity to visit each school in the Morris School District and educate students about their services. Voting will take place at an ice cream social on April 17.  A winner will be announced that evening.

A check for the total amount of coins collected from each school will be presented to the winning organization at a later date. Provident Bank, a supporter of the program since its inception, has pledged $1000.

Meals on Wheels, last year’s winner, received nearly $14,000. Top honors went to SNAP (Special Needs Athletic Program) in 2010.

Woodland School is adding incentives for each grade level. The one that donates the most money will be entitled to “additional recess and a special prize.”  Can the 1st graders regain the early lead from the kindergartners? Tune in next week to find out…
