Decorations, Toys for Tots signal holidays in Morristown

On Monday, there was a Christmas tree. Festive lights were tested. Santa’s house started to shape up.

Another holiday season on the Morristown Green is just days away.

Friday will mark the ninth year that the Morristown Partnership has organized the Christmas Festival at the Morristown Green, continuing a tradition that stretches back 98 years.

The fun starts at 6:30 p.m. with Santa’s annual descent from the roof of the Century 21 department store (with help from the Morristown Fire Department).  From 7:30 pm to 9 pm there will be refreshments, and musical cheer from the Morris Choral Society Chamber Singers.

Over the weekend, Santa will be available for photos and visits from noon to 7 pm. Ice sculpting demos are scheduled for 2 pm and electric train rides will loop the Green all afternoon. Similar family fare will follow on the next three weekends.

And for the fourth straight year, the Morristown Fire Department is supporting the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. Please drop off new, unwrapped toys at the town fire station; the toys will be delivered to disadvantaged local children. A toy donation box also will be on the Green during the month-long festival.

Here’s another nice twist: For $1, you and your children can name a stuffed toy for a child in need. The Fire Department will host a plush toy display on Friday from 6:30 pm to 9 pm. These toys, with handwritten name tags, will be donated to Toys for Tots, and proceeds will benefit the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.

Several businesses have helped the Fire Department with the toy program, said Morristown Firefighter Nick Prizzi, who thanked the A&P, Chase Bank, Grasshopper Off the Green, Headquarters Plaza, Hennessey’s Washington Bar, King’s, London World Connection Salon, Longfellow’s Deli, the Morristown Deli and The UPS Store.
