Eugene Hayes Jr., the Morristown burglary suspect being investigated in connection with dozens of area burglaries, served two-and-a-half years in state prison for convictions on burglary, theft and drug charges.

State records show that Hayes, 39, of Morristown, served jail time from February 2006 to August 2008 and was paroled to Tully House, a correctional halfway house in Newark.

He was sentenced in March 2007 for crimes in Morris County carrying maximum total sentences of 25 years: Seven counts of burglary; three counts of theft; one count of receiving stolen property; and one count each of conspiracy, distribution and possession of drugs.  The earliest listed offense dates to Aug. 19, 2004.

The suspect was arrested at 12:19 pm on Wednesday, Sept. 14, near Wetmore Avenue after a witness called police about a man crawling in the back window of a neighbor’s house.

Wetmore Avenue is the neighborhood of Mayor Tim Dougherty.
