Spending an evening with Aztec Two-Step is like reconnecting with old friends.

Old friends who write thought-provoking songs, with harmonies honed over four decades on the road, punctuated by sparkling guitar work.

And so it was on Friday at the Minstrel in Morris Township. Rex Fowler and Neal Shulman are taking a victory lap, celebrating 40 years as a duo. Although the tour made a winter stop in Chatham at the Sanctuary series, the Aug. 12 show still felt fresh, thanks in part to the intimate confines of the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship. It’s the next best thing to a concert in your living room.

In this video clip, Rex remembers the boyhood skies of his youth in Maine with a 2004 song called Stargazers. The pair is backed by Fred Holman on bass.

Beatles fans also should check out Imagined, last year’s CD by Rex and Tom Dean of Devonsquare honoring John Lennon on what would have been John’s 70th birthday. It mines familiar territory in unfamiliar ways, with surprising results.
