A Laudable talk, by Morristown cartoonist Paul Laud

When the economy headed south in 2008, investment banker Paul Laud did what any sensible investment banker would do.

“I ran off to Vermont,” he said, “and I brought my pens with me.”

The pens were for inking cartoons, not deals.  And for that, we’re mighty grateful.

Paul’s razor-sharp political cartoons and limericks appear on MorristownGreen.com every Tuesday, and in the Recorder newspapers.

During a talk at the Madison Library on Monday, the Morristown resident entertained the audience with a sampling of works skewering Republicans, Democrats and dictators.

Paul said his ideas are gleaned from the pages of the Wall Street Journal, The Economist and TV shows.

“I’m a vidiot,” he confessed. “I love watching stupid television.”

One of Paul’s favorite cartoon subjects is Gov. Chris Christie. When the governor stirred controversy by taking his family on a Christmas vacation, Paul had fun with it, drawing the gov in a spinning teacup at Disney’s Hall of Presidents.

Not long afterward, Paul’s wife, Katie, found herself seated beside the governor’s wife at the Morristown Club. The First Lady evidently had seen the cartoon. She turned to Katie and said politely:

“Oh, by the way, we had a really lovely time in Disney World!”
