On July 14, I did something incredible: I ran 5 kilometers at the annual Verizon Wireless 5K race in Morristown. I’d done it three times before. As had happened the other years, I went in with my dad (because he works for Verizon Wireless).

Representing Verizon Wireless' environmental, health and safety department were, from left, Mike and Andrea Murphy, Gina Mannino, Carl and Paul Hausman, and Cooper Murphy in the stroller.

We saw some friends who I didn’t know and I was introduced to. They work with my dad. Then, I went up with my dad and the others to the crowd at the starting line. Not all of us were running. Several people were pushing strollers and would be walking at the back.

Then we started! We kept on going for quite awhile before I had to stop from stomach cramps. But I kept moving at at least a swift power walk the whole time.

One of Mount Olive's junior track stars, Olivia Weintraub sprints past an adult runner in the home stretch. She finished with a time of 21 minutes and 29.6 seconds.

Along the race at certain points were tables with bunches of cups full of water. People from my track team in Mount Olive were running this. I saw a few friends. There was also a friend from the team that was running. She was coming right up towards the front!

About three-quarters through, I got a burst of adrenaline and started to be able to keep up with at least a swift jog. At the very end, I got enough adrenaline that I just about exploded forward, beating my time from the year before and making my dad look like a snail (I was about 50 feet ahead).

Carl Hausman receives his medal after completing the 5K in 40 minutes and 4.4 seconds.

Afterwards, I was pretty tired and I grabbed quite a bit of water. Then, my dad and I grabbed some takeout Chinese food, which is good for after a race.

And so that was how I ran in the Verizon Wireless 5K race in Morristown.

Carl Hausman, 10, competes with the Mount Olive Junior Track Team and attends St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown.
