Morristown resident Berit Ollestad has turned her home into a temporary warehouse, and she plans to make her front lawn a campground.

It’s all part of her relief efforts for Alabama tornado victims, a drive that culminates on Saturday, June 4, in the town hall parking lot from 9 am to 4 pm. She is asking residents to fill a UPS tractor trailer with nonperishable foods, baby items, school supplies and tarps.

News12 New Jersey stopped by this week and filed this video report about Berit.

To promote the drive, Berit is vowing to spend the next three nights sleeping in a tent on her lawn. (This could be tricky; Morris County is under a tornado watch as we speak.)

Berit is quick to note that she has the option of retreating into her house if necessary.

“Unfortunately, that isn’t the case for a lot of people that have been affected by these devastating storms” in Alabama, she said in an email update.

On Friday night, June 3, she is inviting neighbors to drop off aid items at her place and join her for a marshmallow roast and s’mores.

“It is my hope to turn this event, that is on so many levels heartbreaking, into something that we can feel good about because we made a difference in the lives of the people in Tuscaloosa,” she said.
