The Morris Museum presents Bruce “Cousin Brucie” Morrow for Jersey Rocks, a talk and book-signing starting at 6:30 this evening.   A local radio legend from the early days of rock ‘n’ roll, Morrow will look at the history of rock in New Jersey, and the state’s contributions to the genre.  After the talk, Morrow will sign copies of his book, Rock & Roll…And the Beat Goes On; the book’s a retrospective of 1960s and early 1970s rock ‘n’ roll.  Aretha, Dylan, Little Stevie, the Fab Four, Hendrix:  An amazing era. FRIDAY, May 20

Please drop off your kids’ masterpieces for next week’s MG Kids Art Show! The show is May 25 at Morristown EcoCenter, at 55 Bank St. But we need your art work now. Please bring it to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, at 70 Maple Ave. in Morristown.

The First Presbyterian Church of Succasunna (99 Main Street, Succasunna) is having a Spring Used Clothing Drive from noon – 8 pm and Saturday from 8 am -3:30 pm.  They’re collecting clothing/shoes, household items made of fabric, accessories (hats/gloves, belts/scarves, etc.), and soft and hard toys.  (For a complete list of items, see their website.)  Please drop off items at the church only on the specified dates.  If you are unable to come on those dates but would still like to donate items, please contact Ann Rhodes at 973-479-7629 or at arhodes1110@hotmail.com to make arrangements for the collection. Your donation is tax deductible and tax receipts will be made available.

Susan Werner and Rich Deans appear at the Minstrel from 8 – 11 pm.    Susan’s a songwriter “with the stylish craft of Cole Porter and the spirituality of Bob Franke,” and plays “sophisticated, perfectly tasteful accompaniment on piano & guitar”; you can listen to song samples at her website.  Opener Rich Deans is another songwriter; his stuff is story and character-driven, we’re told.  This show celebrates the release of his second CD, “Living In The World Today.”  At the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morris Township.   Adult admission is $7; children 12 and under get in free.   Call the Folk Project at 973-335-9489 for more, or see the website.

The Morris County Historical Society holds an antique and yard sale at Acorn Hall from 9:30 am – 2 pm, rain or shine.  Vintage and antique furniture, clothing, and accessories; antique lace and trims; vintage jewelry, linens, and collectibles; old books; miscellaneous other antiques, marble sinks, antique hardware, and lighting.  Contemporary furniture, household goods, collectibles, and more are also for sale.  All proceeds benefit MCHS.   At 68 Morris Avenue, Morristown.  Call 973-267-3465 for information, or see Acorn Hall’s website.

It’s Textile Day at Historic Speedwell from 10 am – 5 pm.   Events on tap include an historic fabrics presentation, a textile tour of the Vail House, craft demonstrations, displays, activities and more.  It’s a chance to learn about historic textiles and fashions through demonstrations, hands-on activities, and presentations.   $4.00 admission for adults, $3 for seniors, $2 for children. The Then & Now 2011 Quilt Show hosted by The Garden State Quilter’s Guild is today and Sunday from 10 am – 4 pm at the William G. The Frelinghuysen Arboretum offers a Botanical Papermaking Workshop from 10 am – noon.   Learn to make your own hand-pulled paper incorporating plant material found at the Arboretum.   Greta Anderson of the Printmaking Council of NJ will lead the workshop; it will include a brief history of paper making, demonstrations and hands-on experiences using recycled paper.  Students learn set up, studio terminology, sheet forming, pressing and drying and will also form their own botanical paper to take home.  Cost is $30;  353 E. St. Peter’s continues its new Saturday Night Worship Service in the Parish Hall at 70 Maple Avenue, from 5 – 6 pm today and every Saturday.  Keyboardist Peter Moffitt and his band will lead worship; all are welcome.

Steve Holland & Root Mean Square lead the contra and square dancing  at Swingin’ Tern.  Wes Steenson on guitar, banjo, and percussion; JoAnn Rocke on piano; and Paul Morrissett on fiddle. Dala, a Canadian duo together since 2007, appear at 8 pm at the Sanctuary in Chatham.  The women have been featured at the Newport Folk Festival, the New Orleans Jazz Festival, and on PBS; you can have a listen for yourself at their website.   The Sanctuary calls this their “Audience Appreciation Concert,” in gratitude to concertgoers;  they’re subsidizing the concert and offering tickets for $10 (free for Pick Six members). The Sanctuary is located at the Presbyterian Church at 240 Southern Boulevard in Chatham.

MG.com favorite The Blaire Reinhard Band is back in town after its show last night with Clinton Curtis at The Bowery Electric, appearing tonight at The Famished Frog.   The set starts at 9:30 pm, and there’s no cover.

Garage bands venture outside to celebrate Festival Earth from noon to 5 pm at the Morristown EcoCenter, 55 Bank St. (the former Mini Cooper dealership). Duck inside to visit some green vendors assembled by Sustainable Morristown, then step out to hear some fun kids groups. Bands include Captain Lung, Legato Empire, Amor, Take One, 1st Ave, and Art of Play. Admission is free.

The New Jersey Ballet is back at The Mayo, presenting Sleeping Beauty in two shows at 1:30 and 4 pm. You know the story already:  A princess, a hundred years’ sleep, and a kiss.  Music by Tchaikovsky and storyteller narration.  Tickets $12.  At 100 South Street, Morristown.

Shipwrecks: 350 Years in the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The St. Peter’s Girls’ Choir sings a concert this afternoon starting at 4 pm:  “The Sounds of Joy.” The choir is closing out its season and will sing anthems by Couperin, Bach, Cherubini, and others as well as selections from “The Sound of Music” and some patriotic songs.  It’s free – but if you’d like to give something, bring some (non-perishable) food to donate to the church’s Empty Bowls food drive.   Anne Yardley will conduct; Diane Pivarnik is accompanist.  St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, South Street and Miller Road, Morristown.
