Last summer, while driving through a small Pennsylvania town, I noticed a bold banner over Main Street announcing “Founders Day.”  It struck me that we should have a day to celebrate our local history. Here in Morristown, and Morris County, we live smack in the middle of an area with such a rich history, going all the way back to the battle for independence and the founding of our great nation.

I talked this idea over with some of my fellow members of the Morristown Republican Committee, and I was pleased that my idea was well received, and so we began planning an event.

I explained to the other committee members that it was my hope that in future years a variety of Founders Day events would be hosted by other local organizations, thus offering people a wide array of interesting and diverse celebrations to choose from.

While this inaugural event is sponsored by the Morristown Republican Committee, it will not be an overly political atmosphere. Our intention for this event is simply to celebrate our local history and to recognize a few deserving people of today for their distinguished contributions to our community.

I am particularly excited to hear from a local historian who will be speaking at the event, I am sure that it will prove to be very interesting.

Please join us on April 9 at the Grand Cafe for the inaugural Founders Day reception. Space is somewhat limited, so please RSVP as soon as possible to MorristownFoundersDay@gmail.com. Below is the event’s invitation that gives all the details. Hope to see you there.

Richard Babcock of Morristown is the coordinator for the Nordstrom for Freeholder campaign and vice-chair of the Morristown Municipal Republican Committee. The inaugural Founders Day reception will honor former Morristown Postmaster Bob Tracey, who is active in veterans affairs; centenarian Rose Danna Ruesch, the first woman in Morris County to pass the bar exam; and Morris County Clerk Joan Bramhall. Donations range from $85 to $150.
