THURSDAY, March 17

The Morris Museum offers Antonio Petruccelli An Unsung American Illustrator, at 6 pm. Angela Sergonis, associate curator, discusses Petruccelli’s work.   6 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown.  Admission: Free. For more, call 973-971-3720.

There is a St. Patty’s Party for Young Professionals at 7 pm at Sona Thirteen. Beer specials, a complimentary Irish buffet, and “music that will drive you to step dance.”  NJYP has the whole downstairs bar for this party.

FRIDAY, March 18

The Steve Hess Band, featuring guest saxophonist Rob Middleton, plays jazz at a Fridays-on-the-Green concert today at 12:15 pm. It’s at the Presbyterian Church in Morristown, 57 Park Place (on the Green) and admission is free. Call 973-538-1776 or see www.pcmorristown.org for more.

It’s the last weekend to see Playwrights Theatre’s presentation of Distracted — A Serious Comedy about ADHD — an off-Broadway hit last season.  Tonight and Saturday at 8:00 pm, and Sunday at 2:00 pm. The premise:  9-year-old Jesse’s parents try to find medical and alternative treatments for their perhaps “just-being-a-kid” son — and realize along the way that it might be our culture itself that’s “distracted.”  Co-produced by Playwrights Theater and Dreamcatcher Repertory Theater in South Orange, at 33 Green Village Road, Madison.  Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors 65 and older, and $25 for students under 25. Fiddler Lissa Schneckenburger and her band appear at The Minstrel at 8 pm. With Bethany Waickman on guitar, the concert celebrates Lissa’s newest CD, Dance. SATURDAY, March 19

It’s the Astro Day Family Festival, from 11 am to 4 pm at the Morris Museum.  Throughout the day, families can participate in telescope training (bring your own, too), lectures, planetarium shows, craft activities, and a children’s science workshop, at 6 Normandy Heights Road, Morristown.  Cost:  Free with museum admission.   Also: Night sky observing from 7 to 9  p.m. (weather permitting); $7 per child,$10 for adults.

New Jersey’s young artists compete at the Pearl and Julius Young Rising Stars Music Competition, sponsored by The Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey, from noon to 3 p.m. at the wonderful Dolan Performance Hall, College of Saint Elizabeth, 2 Convent Road, Morristown. The annual Canine Cotillion to Benefit St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center at the Stone House at Stirling Ridge runs from 6 to 10 pm, 50 Stirling Road, Warren.  A favorite yearly event to benefit a beloved local institution, this is an elegant, ties-and-tails optional evening to benefit the canine contingent.  Cocktails and a gourmet dinner (with or without your canine companion).  Silent and Live Auctions. Proceeds benefit the homeless animals at the St. Hubert’s shelters in Madison and North Branch, NJ. Abendmusik, the concert series sponsored by Music At Morristown United Methodist Church, continues its 2010-2011 season with a concer at 7:30 pm: Ashu on saxophone with Kuang-Hao Huang playing the piano.  The duo will perform works by Rachmaninoff, Villa-Lobos, Debussy, tango composer Piazzolla, and more.  Suggested donation at the door:  $15.00 for adults and $12.00 for senior citizens and students.  Call the church at 973-538-2132  for advance tickets ($12 adults/$10 seniors & students).  Student groups with teachers get in free; at  50 Park Place (on the Green), Morristown.   Handicapped accessible; desserts available at the start of the event.  See  www.morristownumc.com for more concert information. The Kodo Drummers of Japan are at the Mayo Center for the Performing Arts at 8 pm, 100 South Street, Morristown. These Japanese drummers explore the possibilities of the taiko, with a musical performance that speaks to Japanese tradition; it’s hard not to imagine they’ll be playing a tribute to their quake-ravaged homeland.     Tickets  $42-$67; call 973-539-8008 or see www.mayoarts.org for more.

Adult Education in Lent: The Meaning of the Cross: Turning Annihilation into Possibility continues today from 10 – 11 am at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.   Bishop Jack Spong taught the first class last week; Sister Eleanor Francis, Superior of the Community of St. John Baptist in Mendham, will lead today’s session.  St. Peter’s Rector Janet Broderick will teach two sessions (March 27, April 3) using film clips, paintings, music, questions and controversy.  Jack Spong will return to give the final class on April 10th.   Free, at the St. Peter’s Parish House, 70 Maple Ave., Morristown. The Gerry Reilly Memorial Hoop-A-Thon runs from 11:30 am  to 7:30 pm at the Morristown-Beard School, Whippany Road, Morris Township.  The second annual Hoop-A-Thon benefits the Special Olympics of New Jersey.  Kids from the Morristown Junior Colonials Travel Basketball program will play an eight-hour coed game. Halftime entertainment includes a Harlem Wizard show and a game pitting the Special Olympics team vs. Morristown coaches. All are welcome to attend; donations at the door are requested.

Over Here and Over There: Morris County’s Role in World War II opens today at Acorn Hall during its regular Sunday house, from 1 to 4 pm. Ordinary citizens willingly left their families and sacrificed their comfort and safety to fight on foreign shores — and sacrificed here at home, too; oral histories, documents, objects, photos, and more.  The exhibit will run all year.  Free with museum admission, at 68 Morris Avenue, Morristown. The Museum is open Mondays and Thursdays from 10 am to 4 pm and Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm.  Admission: $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for students, children under 12 free. On the lighter side, the Popovich Comedy Pet Theater appears at 3 pm and again at 7 pm at the Mayo Center for the Performing Arts,  bringing “15 cats, 10 dogs, four geese, eight doves, two parrots, and a few clowns to boot.”   Starring Russian circus and juggling star Gregory Popovich and his cast of performing pets.  At 100 South Street, Morristown. What a Wonderful World is a Collage Concert at The Presbyterian Church in Morristown, from 4 to 5:30 pm.
