Last year we teamed with our friends at NJ Spotlight to make a video about STARS, an after-school program of the Morristown Neighborhood House imperiled by state budget cuts.

We were hoping the video could be retired. Unfortunately, it has assumed an evergreen quality.

Gov. Christie’s proposed state budget would eliminate all funding for New Jersey After 3, a major patron of the Nabe’s program, for the 2011-12 school year.

The Nabe is urging people to sign an online petition protesting this cutback.

A similar dance happened last year. Eventually, one-third of New Jersey After 3’s budget was restored, and the nonprofit came up with $100,000 for STARS (Smart Talented Athletic Responsible Students), which provides after-school tutoring, musical instruction and athletic activities for 150 students at the Frelinghuysen Middle School in Morris Township. Another $60,000 was raised in donations, ensuring that the program continues through the present academic year.

It’s the fall semester that worries the Nabe.

“We’re determined to keep the STARS program going with or without New Jersey After 3,” said David Walker, executive director of the Neighborhood House.

But he added:

“I’m not as optimistic this year as last year. Fewer people are making noise. And the state has fewer options.”

As a result, David said, the STARS program is in “an extremely vulnerable position.”  Fundraising has grown increasingly difficult.

“It’s the hardest I’ve ever experienced in my two- or three decades of being with nonprofits,” said David, who is a lawyer.

Lashone Murphy, who oversees STARS for the Nabe, echoed David’s statement about the show going on, no matter what.

“We’ll try to continue doing it,” she said. “Three to 6 (pm) are the most dangerous hours  for kids. We make sure they’re safe.”
