For those of us who can’t remember what we had for breakfast, Sophia Laurenzi’s performance this week at Poetry Out Loud was nothing short of astounding.

The Montville High School sophomore recited three challenging poems Tuesday at Morristown’s Community Theatre without so much as an index card.

Sophia’s showing in the regional competition impressed judges Robert Carnevale, Gad Guterman and Carolyn Hunt sufficiently for them to select her to compete in next month’s state finals, along with Rachel Alvey of Madison High.

This video captures Sophia’s animated recitation of Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s Constantly Risking Absurdity.

It was nothing, she said afterward.

On her forensics team, she has to memorize really hard stuff.
