On Sunday the Bears needed him. But Morristown’s Presbyterian Church needed him just a little bit more.

The Rev. David Smazik officially was welcomed as new pastor of the church. Rev. Smazik and his wife Ann moved here from Rockford, Ill., where the minister served at Westminster Presbyterian Church for 17 years.

Back in Illinois, the Chicago Bears were being eliminated from the NFL playoffs by the Green Bay Packers.

Rev. Smazik acknowledged that under normal circumstances he would have been cheering on the Bears.

“My wife says this is good for me,” he said with a smile, greeting well-wishers after the service.

The pastor said he and his wife are enjoying their new hometown so far.

“The church just has wonderful people. You’re expected to say that, but it’s true. These are gifted and talented people,” he said.

Rev. Smazik said the congregation is in good shape, considering it has had several changes in leadership in recent years.

“They really have hung in,” he said.  He added that younger members of the church seem to enjoy a return to traditional forms of worship, when “done well.”  But the pastor has not planned any major changes just yet. “I’m getting the lay of the land,” he said.
