John Hoesly’s love of photography dates to the early 1970s, when he had his own dark room for printing black and white pictures. He went digital in the late ’90s. Here is John’s back story on his winning photo:

John Hoesly, bass player and photographer.

“The picture Early Street Scene was taken in September of 2010 during the early evening.  It utilizes a technique that combines three separate photos into one composite picture.  It was taken with a Canon 50D camera and processed in Photoshop and Photomatix Pro.”

John says he spends lots of time setting up his shots, but spends even more time “processing the pictures trying to coax the photos to life, which may be a throwback to the days and nights spent in the darkroom.”

His passion for photography is rivaled by his love for music. Born in Spokane, WA, and a Morristown resident since 1980, John attended the Manhattan School of Music and was a studio bass player for 23 years,  playing on albums by Gladys Knight and the Pips, among other top acts.

Lex Kevis has honed his photographic talent at Morristown's Alexander Hamilton School.

Lex Kevis, age 10, is a fourth-grader at Alexander Hamilton School. According to his mom, Susan, Lex’s interest in pictures was kindled in an after-school photography club run by Mrs. Murphy, the school librarian.

“I like photography because it gives people a chance to look at things from a different perspective than they usually would,” Lex says.

His winning photo depicts the façade of the Alexander Hamilton School.

Lex also plays baseball and basketball, enjoys sailing “and, of course, video games,” says his mother.

Realtor Irene Tzifas Leavy furnished the contest prizes– gift certificates from the Morristown Partnership. Our thanks to Neil Ellefsen of the Alexander Hamilton Neighborhood Association for sharing these great photos. Congratulations to the winners, and to all the other shutterbugs who gave them stiff competition.
