A lot of people have been stepping up to the plate this Thanksgiving. On Monday, the New York Jets hosted a pre-holiday feast for 80 people from Morristown’s Homeless Solutions. On Tuesday, GE Aviation and Investors Savings Bank delivered turkeys to the Morristown Neighborhood House.

This morning, it was Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty’s turn.

The Mayor and his wife Mary presented a $2,000 check to Maj. Walter Droz of the Salvation Army, from the Timothy P. Dougherty Children’s Fund Charity Inc.

“This is going to feed 50 families for Thanksgiving. This is all they need for a joyful Thanksgiving,” said Maj. Droz.

The Mayor said the idea for this donation dates to Oct. 9, when he received calls inquiring about long lines on Spring Street.

People began lining up outside the Salvation Army office at 3 a.m. that day for an 8 a.m. registration for Thanksgiving turkeys, Maj. Droz said.

The children’s fund consists of donations from private individuals, the Mayor said. “They deserve to be thanked,” he said. About $6,000 has been raised since the fund was established last fall, he said.

“It’s an honor to be of service,” Mary said.

“This is one of the benefits of being mayor,” added the Mayor. Such moments make all the hard duties–redevelopment, planning, garbage, parking–worthwhile, he said. “I’ll know that when I’m breaking bread with my family, 50 people will be breaking bread with theirs.”
