Trick or Treat: Kids descend on Morristown businesses for Halloween costume contest

Never mind that not a single kid offered me any candy. Apparently, bribing judges is no longer taught in New Jersey public schools.

Or maybe they’ve expanded “don’t take candy from strangers” to include “don’t give candy to strangers.”

Just the same, it was a blast to join Kadie Dempsey and Barbara Reuther of the Arts Council of the Morris Area on the judging panel for Friday’s kids Halloween costume contest, sponsored by the Morristown Partnership.

About 40 youngsters loaded up on sweets at downtown businesses and then paraded into the Hyatt Morristown lobby to be judged. They sported some devilishly ingenious costumes. Selecting the winners was extremely difficult.

It would have been much easier with a few M&Ms, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and Mars Bars under the table… but that would have been so wrong!

In fairness, one trick-or-treater did take my not-so-subtle candy hint.

With a big grin, he dug into his bag and handed me…an empty wrapper.

Morristown, it seems, has a bright future.

STAY TUNED FOR THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE WINNING COSTUMES!
