The Urban Farm at Lafayette, run by the non-profit Grow It Green Morristown, is hosting its first fundraiser on Sunday at 4 p.m.

A vintage 1949 REO Speed-wagon truck will serve wood-fired pizza topped with fresh produce picked right at the Urban Farm. There will be live blues music by the Catbirds, croquet, and a silent auction. Desserts will be donated by The Artist Baker from Morristown.

Tickets are $75, by mail or online. Details are at Grow it Green Morristown; all proceeds will further the work of the garden.

Grow It Green was founded a year and a half ago by Carolle Huber, Myra Bowie-McCready and Samantha Rothman to promote environmental awareness.

The organic farm, off Hazel Street behind the Lafayette Learning Center, is cared for by Morristown volunteers on weekends and by a full-time gardener during summer weeks, thanks to a grant from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.

The farm donates and sells organic vegetables to the Interfaith Food Pantry and Market Street Mission.

The garden is incredibly beautiful to walk through, and makes you feel peaceful as you view the abundance of plants.  There are many different varieties of vegetables and herbs, from fresh beets and kale to tomatoes, cucumbers and basil.

Most of us have never seen how asparagus or artichokes grow from the earth. There’s also a shed adorned with painted sunflowers that children like to sit in during the many class trips to the farm. Gorgeous flowers surround the garden.

Grow It Green Morristown also runs the Early Street Community Garden, near Morristown High School, where residents can pay for individual plots of land to grow vegetables.

People from the community work side by side and get to know one another, sharing gardening ideas, successes and failures.

Jill Anderson says that she joined the garden because she has too much shade and too many deer at home.

“It’s a way to step into the country environment in the middle of the city,” she said. “It clears my head. It was where people dumped trash and now it’s really attractive in the middle of the neighborhood.”

There are also social events and educational sessions, such as demonstrations of beekeeping and tutorials on how to use natural solutions to manage bug invasions.
