If you look really closely, you might catch the hint of a smile on the bronzed face of George Washington as he watches traffic zoom past him on Morris Street and Washington Avenue in Morristown.

That’s because another donor has volunteered to help spruce up the General’s traffic island near the historic Ford Mansion.

Morris & Bergen Irrigation has agreed to install an underground sprinkler system for new plantings that will decorate the 1928 monument park, said Councilwoman Rebecca Feldman, who has worked for a year on this project to spruce up the “forlorn” site.

“It’s all coming together,” Rebecca said. “You know how they say, ‘If you’re feel you’re getting stressed, will this matter in 50 years?’ This will. The trees and shrubs that Carolle (Huber) has planned will look even better then.”

Carolle is a landscape architect who is donating services, along with Home Properties Inc., the owners of Jacob Ford Village, and Star-Lo Electric.

The statue designed by George Richard Roth was dedicated in 1928 on the 147th anniversary of the British surrender at Yorktown.
