An artist’s first solo commercial exhibition is a big deal. Timothy David Lang, 31, had plenty of friends and family on hand last Friday to celebrate his one-man show, Specifics, at Morristown’s Gallery Egan.
And he was especially fortunate to welcome his mentor and former professor, Jinchul Kim, who ignored the threat of Hurricane Earl and traveled from Salisbury University in Maryland for the occasion.
“As far as the actual painting goes, he’s the guy that made this possible,” Tim said at the reception. “He’s always able to see the next step. Chances are tonight, he’ll be talking about how to get my work into New York, L.A. and Europe. He always knows the next step to take for me.”
“I’m very proud of what he’s doing,” said Jinchul Kim, who compared Tim’s exhibition to a train station. “This is his first station, it will sustain his journey.”
Tim’s landlord in Morristown, artist Robert Richardson, said the thrill of a new exhibition never grows old–and neither does the opportunity to keep improving.
“I like the idea that at 50, I can think of stuff from two years ago that was crap…and two years from now I could do something great,” Bob said. “No matter how old you get, you can still have excitement.”
