Shakespeare’s ‘As You Like It’ holds up under August sun outside Morristown’s Macculloch Hall

The show must go on, even in the heat of an August afternoon. And so it did yesterday, with surprisingly happy results.

Proving that all the world’s a stage, or at least, all the lawn, the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s Next Stage Ensemble performed the comedy “As You Like It” behind Morristown’s Macculloch Hall Museum.

Director Abigail Isaac’s 75-minute production moved along briskly, with early-20th-century costumes and a clever, minimalist set that transformed a piece of Morristown’s historic district into the Forest of Arden.

And Penn State graduate Victoria Longwell was delightful as the gender-bending Rosalind.

The Next Stage Ensemble is a training ground for young actors; this troupe will perform “As You Like It” more than 30 times this summer at libraries, schools, retirement communities and summer camps across the state.

Sunday’s presentation was made possible by a grant from the Arts Council of the Morris Area.
