Morristown public works employee gets probation in drug case

A laborer in Morristown’s public works department has received three years’ probation after pleading guilty to evidence-tampering–swallowing heroin during a police investigation, reports The Daily Record.

The employee, Jerome Kennedy, 52, of Morristown, will be allowed to keep his $38,300 job, according to the paper.  Superior Court Judge Philip J. Maenza warned the defendant that he will go to jail if he messes up this second chance. The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office plans to appeal, to seek job forfeiture, the paper reports.

The case dates to December 2008, when police in Morris Township questioned the off-duty Jerome Kennedy about a drug buy.

Morris County Assistant Prosecutor Brian DiGiacomo told the judge that the defendant, who has a lengthy criminal record, was arrested in Newark last month on a drug charge. The paper quotes the official as saying that Kennedy does not deserve probation.
