They say it ain’t the heat, it’s the humidity.

But even the humidity eased up for Thursday’s Lawyers for Kids 5K. At least, that’s how it felt on the sidelines.

“It was very hot,” said Karl O’Reilly, moments after winning the race at Ginty Field in Morris Township. Karl is a 30-year-old native of Ireland; these days he lives in Whippany and works in sales. He finished in 16:18. Ben Clarke, a 26-year-old engineer from Morristown, was next at 16:31.

“It wasn’t that bad in the shade,” said Karyn Layton, 39, of Rockaway. She was among the top women with a time of 21:56.

The sixth annual Lawyers for Kids 5K was a benefit for the Court Appointed Special Advocates of Morris and Sussex Counties, a nonprofit that seeks safe homes for abused and neglected children.

William Krais, an attorney who chaired the race committee for the Morris County Bar Association Foundation, estimated that $35,000 was raised from sponsorships and race registrations.
