Two outdoor roller rinks that opened just two summers ago on the former campus of Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital near Morris Plains are closed for resurfacing.

That’s the bad news.

On the bright side, they should reopen within the next two weeks–and the repairs are covered under the builder’s warranty, said Reynold Fauci, recreation director for the Morris County Park Commission.

Cracks have developed in the concrete surfaces of both rinks, possibly because of drainage issues, he explained.

Dave Helmer, executive director of the park commission, said soccer cages also may have caused unexpected damage.

The rinks were part of a $9 million county project called Central Park of Morris County that includes a “challenger baseball field” for disabled athletes and a dog park, on what once was a sprawling state psychiatric institution.

In the winter, the county floods one of the rinks for ice skating. Both rinks have lights for night play; reservations and a fee are required for evening use.

  1. We play on these rinks every Saturday, and notice that the left one could use a little bit of patch work.

    Thank you

  2. our rink is having the same issue. We are exploring pcv and flex piping to go under our rink and pitching it to flow the water naturally out of the rink. However, we are talking major cutting and recementing under the rink. We are also not sure what the winter will bring to our rink as we just put down new flooring.
