Think it was hot over the weekend? You should have been in the ring at Morristown’s Neighborhood House.

The Nabe’s K.O. Boxing Club staged four amateur matches on Saturday. Our camera practically melted trying to follow the scorching action.

These photos depict a TKO by Jose Aviles, a 151-pounder from Union City who bloodied Herman Martinez, a stoic battler from the K.O. club. (VIDEO IS HERE.)

The club started three decades ago at the Neighborhood House, struck out on its own, and returned to the fold three years ago, said David Walker, executive director of the Nabe.

“Boxing teaches discipline and respect,” said David. Although all four local fighters came up short against opponents from Union City and Plainfield, he said, “they did great, and we’re very proud of them.”

KO Trainer Esteban Rodriguez, a pretty tough junior middleweight from Paterson in his day, said Saturday was a learning experience for his boxers, who are just starting out. His program has about 15 kids “from all walks of life,” including one female fighter.

Maurie Colin, 18, said boxing is pretty hard. He loves it.

“I always wanted to see what it felt like to be in the ring,” he said. “It feels great. I really enjoy it.”
