“It’s All Good” in North Carolina

There’s more to marching bands than meets the eye. In this series, Jason Wicks of Morristown High School ‘09 & Appalachia State University will take us behind the scenes as he participates in a top 12 World CLass Drum and Bugle Corps in his quest for marching and musical perfection. –Doug Rutan, Morristown High School Music Department

This update will be a somewhat short one as today has been a long day and not much has happened since the last update. The major happenings of the weekend were two meetings that we had, one talking about logistics and whatnot, and the second one was between all the members of the Drum Corps and the design team. The designers and music writers of the show explained to us what “A Second Chance,” our show title, really meant, which was followed by a Q&A session between the team and the corps. It’s a very interesting concept, but I’ll let you all see it and figure it out on your own…don’t want to ruin anything!

We also had a color guard clinic here for about fifty teenagers over the weekend. They learned choreography to the song William Tell Overture, which Carolina Crown is known for after performing it as part of their show in 2007. To reward their hard work, the whole corps played William Tell at a stand still while the young guard members did the guard work they learned to go along with it.

The weather has been pretty awesome lately. There have been plenty of clouds to keep us cool, rain every now and then, and the breeze today was absolutely terrific. If everyday’s weather was like today’s, there would be a lot more happy members.

After we learn a few more things tomorrow morning, our show will be complete, all eleven or so minutes of it. It’s all very exciting putting it together with the color guard, the front ensemble, and the percussion on the field. It’s scary to think that in about ten days from now, I will be putting on the uniform and performing the show for the first time!

That’s pretty much all the news there is. This week is looking to be a pretty good one with a Drum Major and Percussion clinic next weekend. They also told us during one of the meetings that we would get a morning block off to sleep in and do laundry or whatever we need to do…can’t wait for that one! Hope you all are enjoying these updates, and sorry it has been over a couple days. I’m trying to update every two days, three at max. Once I’m on tour though, I’ll be updating more if I have time. Goodnight!
