Yesterday, Jersey Central Power & Light blamed the May 3 explosion at the Morristown & Township Library on a “combustible gas” unrelated to its electrical activities.
But the gas company, Public Service Electric & Gas, today says it’s not the culprit, either.
“PSE&G has been cooperating and actively participating in all investigation activities to date. There is no indication that natural gas or any PSE&G facilities contributed to this incident. Testing has demonstrated that our facilities are not involved,” the company said in a statement.
The basement explosion caused severe structural damage that has closed the library indefinitely. A swift evacuation by library staff moments before the explosion–lights flickered, alarms went off, and smoke was spotted wafting from a JCP&L manhole outside the building–has been credited with averting injuries or worse.
