Festival Earth: A green day on the Morristown Green

0

Saturday’s Festival Earth was a day-long celebration of our planet that showcased innovative ways to preserve it. The day was filled with live music from homegrown bands, and vendors who promoted products and services for a “green and sustainable” environment.

The theme, woven through the music, the environmentally friendly pictures painted by kids, and the many vendors sharing the Morristown Green, was a sustainable Morristown.

Noteworthy vendors included:

“Green Energy Innovations,” offering ways to lower utility bills by using solar energy. Visit their website at www.geinnovations.net.

“Transitioning to Green” has a graduate certification program, “Managing Sustainability,” at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Anyone interested in advancing sustainability within his or her organization should contact Kerry Mowry at 973-683-1220 or visit www.transitioningtogreen.com.

Sunflower lovers entered the First Annual Tallest Sunflower Contest, sponsored by “Grow It Green Morristown,” a non-profit organization committed to safe neighborhoods, walkable communities, bicycle friendly streets and clean air and water. Visit www.growitgreenmorristown.org.

Recycling cell phones, batteries, chargers and accessories is part of Verizon Wireless’ Hopeline program. Discarded phones are refurbished and re-sold, with proceeds funding cash grants for local shelters and non-profits focused on domestic violence awareness and prevention. Phones that cannot be salvaged are disposed of in an environmentally sound way. For more information, see www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline.

Leaving the Green on Saturday, I was reminded what a precious resource our earth is– and how important it is to maintain it for future generations to enjoy.
