If you couldn’t make it to Sunday’s MorristownGreen.com Music Showcase, here is sampling of what you missed.

The event was part of Sustainable Morristown’s Earth Day Experience 2012; our thanks to SusMo and to the Morristown Parking Authority for letting us reprise our 2009 MG Music Fest in the spacious DeHart Street parking garage.
Likewise, our thanks to Earth Day Experience sponsors Covanta Energy, the Daily Record, Toyota of Morristown and Villa Enterprises.
Thanks to all the visitors and vendors who braved the damp forecast, and to the Original Music School and Captain Lung for their help with equipment. Vic Ruiz did yeoman’s work on the sound board and even took a turn on drums.
And special thanks to the performers who played their hearts out despite the chilly weather: Hanna Neil, Lauren Smith, Untitled, Hub Hollow, Art of Play, 1st Ave, Room for Three, Brian Cunningham and Captain Lung, which warmed the garage with a hot closing set.
Next up: Please visit our free jazz night this Friday, April 27, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. At 7 pm the Peter Moffitt Medicine Show will kick off our two-week MG Kids Arts Festival. And next Tuesday, May 1, it’s WordPlay II, a free evening of jazz and improv, same time same place!

Show time! MorristownGreen.com music showcase, Earth Day events ready for dry parking garage
Our last major event, last summer’s MG Film & Music Festival, collided with Tropical Storm Irene.
Forecasters say we’re in for some plentiful rain today, April 22, as well.
But this time, we have plenty of shelter from the storm–inside the DeHart Street parking garage. So please join us at noon for the MORRISTOWNGREEN.COM MUSIC & ART SHOWCASE, with our friends from Sustainable Morristown and WDHA Radio.

The free concert is part of Earth Day Experience 2012, which will include a town-wide tag sale and expos on sustainable living, healthy foods and electric cars, plus tours of the green home of the Morristown Parking Authority at 14 Maple Ave. (It boasts solar power, a live “bio-wall” and geothermal wells.)
Our music lineup includes something for everyone: Rock, pop and R&B from some terrific teen bands; old-timey bluegrass, a hint of country and smooth jazz.
THE MG MUSIC & ARTS SHOWCASE ROSTER:
Noon: Hanna Neil, 6th-grader who sings like a pro
12:15: Lauren Smith, who aims to become the next Taylor Swift
1:00: Untitled, led by popular MHS alum Ben Rhodes
1:45: Hub Hollow: Old-timey bluegrass never sounded so good
2:30: Art of Play, 8th-graders seek glory at the Apollo
3:15: 1st Ave, dynamite in a small package
3:45: Brian Cunningham, king of the sax
4:30: Amor: Love at first sound
5:15: Captain Lung, prizewinners at Morristown’s Got Talent!
Videos: They will rock your world on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22 in Morristown
No amount of rain can dampen this lineup! Here, in order of appearance, are the performers scheduled to play on Sunday, April 22, at the MorristownGreen.com Music & Arts Showcase.
We’re throwing this party atop the DeHart Street Parking Garage (down one level if it rains) with our friends from Sustainable Morristown and WDHA Radio. The fun starts at noon, it’s FREE, and it’s part of Earth Day Experience 2012–which includes a giant garage sale and expos on green living and healthy eats.
Note: Start times are approximate.
NOON: Hanna Neil‘s performance at Morristown’s Got Talent! in February would have been impressive even if she weren’t a 6th-grader. She sang Adele’s One and Only with poise and style before nearly 1,300 people. The best advice she received? “Make the song about you, not Adele herself,” Hanna said.

Hanna Neil, a sixth-grader from Frelinghuysen Middle School, will perform at the MG Music & Arts Showcase on April 22. Photo by Kevin Coughlin
12: 15 pm: Lauren Smith, most likely is one of the rising stars at the Original Music School in Morristown, where young singer-songwriters hone their skills. She reminds us a little bit of Taylor Swift as a kid. Wait– Taylor Swift is a kid. Who knows? Maybe someday we’ll be saying Taylor reminds us of Lauren.
1 PM: Morristown High School alum Ben Rhodes has played in a few bands in recent years, and we have found something to like at each stop. First, it was Charlie and the Vanilla Faces–at our first parking deck extravaganza. Next, Electric Blue Sunrise at Festival Earth. Then, Nick Dickey for tornado relief. At December’s First Night Battle of the Bands, Ben fronted a group called Untitled. And that’s the combo we’ll hear on Earth Day: Ben on guitar with his Montclair State University pals Ethan Fria (guitar), Jordan Nanglona (bass) and Mike Deering (drums).

1:45 pm: Hub Hollow has built a Morristown following thanks to garden gigs at the Macculloch Hall Historical Museum and jam sessions at the Dark Horse Lounge. It doesn’t hurt that most of them are Morristown-Beard grads, either. The band consists of twins Jill (vocals) and John Turpin (guitar), Rick Chance (bass), Jason Frigerio (mandolin) and Tim Ryan (dobro). Collectively, their musical journey began with the Beatles, Led Zeppelin and the Grateful Dead, detoured through Dylan, and finally arrived at bluegrass. Behold the alchemy!

What's more appropriate on Earth Day than bluegrass? Hub Hollow brings its old-timey goodness to the MG Music & Arts Showcase on April 22.
2:30 pm: You don’t usually think of eighth-graders as perfectionists. But Art of Play studies pop music and strives to make every performance unique and memorable. Domenico Randazzo (guitar), Ricky Webber (keyboard), T.J. Coon (bass) and Tyler Volk (drums) together are competing for top amateur honors at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater, and it’s easy to see why they have a good shot at winning.

3:15 pm: 1st Ave showed lots of promise last year on Earth Day at the EcoCenter. We can’t wait to hear this group again, after another year with ace tutor Vic Ruiz. 1st Ave is Julia Draper, Dorothea Miller, Kathryn Rejaei, and Ryan Rejaei.
3:45 pm: No wonder Brian Cunningham is so good. He works for God! The new music director of Morristown’s Bethel A.M.E. Church coaxes some heavenly sounds from his saxophone. Brian has toured in bands backing the comedian Sinbad and the singer Ginuwine. But he’s all ours this Sunday. Hallelujah!

4:30 pm: They’re too young to be jaded by life on the road. But Amor is one of those rare teen bands that has experienced it. Twins Jaylon and Jevon Jorge, Ryan Skoletsky and Arminda Flores played seven states, from Connecticut to Florida, during last summer’s “No Bully Tour” sponsored by the F.Y.E. entertainment chain. We’re betting they will conquer the remaining 43 states before they hang up their microphones.

5:15 pm: We wanted Captain Lung to close the show to celebrate the trio’s recent prizewinning performance at Morristown’s Got Talent! Morristown High School students Travis Fielding (drums), Johannes Burger (vocals, keyboard) and Andy McNally (guitar) have been jamming together since elementary school. Clearly, they push each other to surpass themselves on stage…maybe like Cream? (Google them, kids.) They already have played the famed Stone Pony. Now, the roof of Morristown. Who knows what heights they will scale next.

Video: Come hear Brian Cunningham on Morristown’s roof, Sunday, April 22
If anyone can blow the roof off the DeHart Street Parking Garage, it’s Brian Cunningham.
This 23-year-old sax player will join a star-studded roster of young talent at the MORRISTOWNGREEN.COM MUSIC & ARTS SHOWCASE, part of Earth Day Experience 2012 on Sunday, April 22.
Our FREE concert–in partnership with Sustainable Morristown and WDHA Radio– runs from noon to 6 pm atop the parking deck, at DeHart and Maple in Morristown. Don’t worry about rain–we’ll just move the show down one level where it’s nice and dry.
Unless, of course, Brian blows the roof off the joint.
Brian gave us a preview last month at Morristown’s Bethel A.M.E. Church, which wooed him from Maryland to become the church music director. This video should whet your appetite for Brian’s rooftop set, scheduled for 4 pm.
Spread the word–and see you on Sunday!

Video: Captain Lung warms up for Morristown rooftop gig, April 22
Fans can scream their lungs out for Captain Lung this Sunday, April 22, high above Morristown on the roof of the DeHart Street parking garage.
The Lung is closing the MorristownGreen.com Music & Arts Showcase, part of Earth Day Experience 2012. Lots of great local acts will join the Morristown High School trio from noon to 6 pm. And it’s free!
We’re working with our friends at Sustainable Morristown and WDHA Radio on this, the second rooftop concert by MG. There will be plenty of additional family fun, including a town-wide garage sale, a sustainable living expo, an electric-hybrid car show, a healthy food festival and tours of the amazingly eco-friendly home of the Morristown Parking Authority, 14 Maple Ave.
And don’t fret about the weather. If any raindrops come our way, we’ll just move the music down one level in the garage.
To get you in the mood, here is video of Captain Lung– Johannes Burger on vocals, Andy McNally on guitar and Travis Fielding on drums–giving a prize-winning performance at Morristown’s Got Talent!

Morristown talent show prizewinner Captain Lung to cap rooftop show, April 22
We always knew Captain Lung would make it to the top.
Fresh off its prize-winning performance in Morristown’s Got Talent!, the high-flying trio from Morristown High will close Sunday’s MorristownGreen.com Music & Arts Showcase seven stories above town, on the roof of the DeHart Street parking garage.
We’re hosting the April 22 rooftop show from noon to 6 pm in conjunction with Sustainable Morristown and WDHA Radio, as part of Earth Day Experience 2012.
While we showcase promising young musicians and artists from Greater Morristown on the solar-paneled rooftop, lower levels of the parking deck will feature a town-wide garage sale where you can Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, and an electric-hybrid car show, both co-hosted by the Daily Record. WMTR’s Green Divas Radio Show co-hosts a sustainable living expo, and Patch is co-hosting a healthy foods festival.
The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, meanwhile, will lead tours through the Morristown Parking Authority’s adjoining headquarters at 14 Maple Ave., a LEED-certified, geothermal marvel of environmental design.
Want to sell your old stuff? Spaces at Sunday’s town garage sale are just $25.

Captain Lung will be in good company on Sunday. Hanna Neil, a sixth-grade sensation from the talent show, will get things started. The roster also includes the ever-popular Amor (formerly Boys Nyte), young pop stylists First Avenue, the old-timey Hub Hollow, and up-and-coming sax star Brian Cunningham.
Art of Play, an eighth-grade quartet gunning for top amateur honors at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater, will rock the garage. And Morristown High alum Ben Rhodes, who played in our first rooftop show in 2009, returns with a new band, Untitled, and a mix of original and classic pop songs.
The Lung features Johannes Burger on vocals and keyboard/bass, Andy McNally on guitar and Travis Fielding on drums. Johannes and Travis are juniors at MHS; Andy is a sophomore.
Travis describes their style as indie rock/blues. He and Johannes began their musical collaboration in the 5th grade. Andy came aboard soon after a bass player quit in 2006. The trio now boasts about 10 original compositions, and a résumé that includes three appearances in the Frelinghuysen Middle School Talent Show (including First Place in 2009); gigs at the famed Stone Pony, the Stanhope House and the 2011 MorristownGreen.com Film & Music Festival; and Third Prize in Morristown’s Got Talent! in February.
“We jam together, and if we like what we hear, we structure things and revise it. When we finish the structure, Johannes writes the lyrics,” Travis explained to us in an interview last year.
This won’t be the first rooftop visit for Travis and Johannes. At our MG Music Fest atop the garage in 2009, the boys met singers Liv Platt and Jordy Black, who performed as the Jersey Girls. The four later teamed up in a group called The Members.
As Captain Lung (a “stream of consciousness” name), the boys were flying high after their recent talent show triumph. What heights remain for them to scale?
“We’re going to South by Southwest, then Bonnaroo,” Travis said that night, with the hint of a grin. “I’m thinking we’re having a European tour, with the first stop the O2 Arena in London.”
The MG Music & Arts Showcase runs from noon to 6 pm on Sunday, April 22, atop the DeHart Street parking deck in Morristown. Admission is FREE. If it rains, the show moves down one level in the garage.

The second half begins with a medley from “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein. Following that is music by Randall Thompson featuring his much-beloved “Alleluia,” and music of Aaron Copland including “Shall We Gather at the River” and “Zion’s Walls.” The concert will conclude with a sing-along medley of patriotic songs ending with the Wilhousky arrangement of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”

Video: A song for a somber day, as Morristown says goodbye to Lennon Baldwin
On Saturday night in Madison Coro Lirico sang Agnus Dei from Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings.
It seems a fitting video to play on this Monday morning, as Morristown prepares for the funeral of Morristown High School freshman Lennon Baldwin. Authorities are investigating whether bullying pushed him to take his life at his Morris Township home last week.
The service is scheduled for 10 am at the Morristown United Methodist Church.

Lennon Baldwin, a Morristown High School freshman, is being mourned by the community. Facebook photo.
Long lines waited inside Madison’s Dangler Funeral Home to pay their respects at Lennon’s wake on Sunday.
Arrayed around his open casket were things that he loved– a red Epiphone electric guitar, a longboard, a bowling ball bag. A small index card bore a quote from Lennon about the importance of helping others.
Nearby, the Beatles’ All You Need Is Love accompanied a computer slide show of photos from the 15-year-old’s life: Swimming with dolphins on a vacation, playing Little League baseball, bowling a strike.
His schoolboy writings talked about a favorite book, a best friend, and a tumble in a road race.
The Adagio for Strings was broadcast on the radio when President Franklin Roosevelt died, and was played at the funerals of Albert Einstein and Princess Grace.
It also commemorated victims of the 9/11 terror attacks and has been used as a soundtrack in many films, including Platoon, The Elephant Man, and Amélie.
And it appeared in two of Lennon Baldwin’s favorite TV comedies, The Simpsons and South Park.
