Scenes from the first Morristown Bike Fest, by Hal Crosthwaite

The first Morristown Bike Fest was a colorful affair, with live music, organic vegan food, hooping, chalk art and a display of machines ranging from John Tetz’s self-designed Velomobile to a high-wheeler that your great-great-grandfather might have ridden.

Cyclists converged on the Morristown EcoCenter after the monthly Critical Mass ride, on May 27.

Cyclists take alter-egos for a spin at end-of-October Halloween ride in Morristown

Some themes are no-brainers. Last-Friday-of-the-month bike ride…October…Halloween!!!

That being said, a fair amount of thought went into costumes of riders stoic enough to brave chilly weather,  vampires, zombies and evil motorists.

Wonder what Bike Morristown will cook up for the post-Thanksgiving ride?

Leader of the pack: Toby tops the field in Morristown Critical Mass ride

Sure, he’s pint-sized. And his bike only has one gear. But that didn’t stop eight-year-old Toby Gaynor of Morris Township from rocketing to the front of Friday’s Critical Mass ride in Morristown.

Technically speaking, the monthly biking event through downtown Morristown is not a race–as Toby’s dad, Conor, frequently reminded him.

Still, we imagine Toby will be doing some bragging next month when he takes his rightful place in the third grade at the Alexander Hamilton School.

The Otten family, meanwhile, rolled out some new bikes from Marty’s Reliable Cycles.

So we expect Toby’s crown may be challenged next month by the likes of Josie, Courtney and Emily Otten–ages 8, 8 and 10–and their pals, Ally and Carly Toth, ages 7 and 9.

Weekend roundup: Morristown’s annual Zombie Ride

Zombies get a bad rap. They may seem a little cold, but they can’t help it. Once you get to know them, they warm up a little.  The proof was on Friday, when the Critical Mass cycling crowd held its annual Zombie Ride.

Check it out:

Zombies will be mixing and mingling with the general public tonight in Morristown, so be alert! The monthly bike ride leaves from town hall tonight at 6:30, with humans and zombies, welcome. If you need some help with your zombie look, stop by the town hall parking lot early, starting at about 5:45-ish.

Following the ride zombies can meet-up at Tito’s Burritos for a tasty alternative to brains. Possible rain showers are dampening plans for an outdoor secret cinema, but you can still check out some classic zombie flicks on the small screen at Tito’s tonight!
