Some examples are here: http://vimeo.com/videoschool/lesson/136/documentaries-defined
Documentary film is a broad category of visual expression that is based on the attempt, in one fashion or another, to “document” reality.–Documentary Archive.com
At the end of the day, the subject itself is not a movie. You have to–like a good nonfiction book, you can be sure that the civil rights movement a good story, but unless you tell that story well, it’s not a good book. The same thing is true with a documentary. I mean, I think you have to get all ‘the stuff.’ But then you have to put it together in a way that makes it compelling viewing for people who’re going to come to see it. And, hopefully, there’s enough of the author, too, sometimes in indirect ways, that makes the documentary interesting.–Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side), on About.com

ABOUT THE CULTURAL DIVERSITY CATEGORY:
MorristownGreen.com is delighted to welcome the Building Cross Cultural Communities Committee to this year’s MG Film Fest. The BCCC strives to promote cultural understanding, on behalf of the Morris County Human Relations Commission. Committee members will judge entries submitted to this new category by Morris County students in three age groups: High School, Junior High School and Elementary School. Winning entries will be shown at the Festival, where prizes will be awarded.
Here’s more from the BCCC:
The goal of the Morris County Human Relations Commission is to actively encourage, develop, promote and strengthen respect for human rights and cultural diversity among the residents of Morris County.
There are important social and moral values that help keep societies afloat. With this in mind, the MCHRC Building Cross Cultural Communities Committee and its partner, MorristownGreen.com, have decided to organize a special diversity category of the annual MorristownGreen.com Film Festival to instill some of these values in our youth and to give them a forum and platform in which they can express their understanding and analyses of these values.
The purpose of the contest is to encourage students and teachers to create documentaries about the many forms that prejudice takes in our society. It is our hope that by recognizing differences and exploring their personal experiences, students will begin to understand that compassion and tolerance are essential in our society today.
Check back on MorristownGreen.com for the Festival date, location, prizes and updates.
Multiple entries, labeled separately, may be submitted for all categories.
If your video is chosen for the Festival, you will be notified via email. Make sure to notify us if your email changes, and add MorristownGreen@gmail.com to your safe-sender email list.
The still image from your video should be at least 300 dpi and make viewers want to see the video.
Your synopsis should do the same; we may edit or rewrite it for the Festival program.
Videos will be chosen based on storytelling, artistry, filmmaking techniques, and general audience appeal.
We cannot promise feedback if your film is not accepted. The need for additional editing often is a decisive factor. Profanity, pornography, gratuitous violence, personal attacks or defamatory material also will result in disqualification. Remember, the Festival is a family friendly event.
Likewise, entries that do not broadly fit this year’s Documentary theme will be rejected. (If there are special reasons why your entry should qualify as a Documentary, include them with your entry information.)
We attempt to present an entertaining mix of videos, which may result in worthy entries not making the cut. Don’t despair; we may post honorable mentions to MorristownGreen.com for online viewing.
