The Morristown Shade Tree Commission has won a $20,000 grant from TD Bank to plant new trees and shrubs at Morristown High School and the Lafayette Learning Center. MHS students also will participate in Arbor Day events on April 22, 2017.

Here are more details.

From the town of Morristown:

Today, the Town of Morristown and the Morristown Shade Tree Commission, was announced as a winner of TD Green Streets, a grant program from TD Bank, America’s Most Convenient Bank®, and the Arbor Day Foundation supporting innovation in urban forestry.

The $20,000 grant will fund projects throughout Morristown, including planting new trees and shrubs in front of the new Morristown High School building this Arbor Day with assistance from a local landscape artist.

On Saturday, April 22, 2017, a fun filled event open to the public will be facilitated by the high school’s STEM academy students in collaboration with the Morristown Shade Tree Commission and town arborist Richard Wolowicz.

In celebration of Arbor Day, the event will include educational tables run by some of the students and the unveiling of the tree garden planted in front of the new STEM building.

“Urban trees are an integral part of making our community beautiful and this grant will help make Morristown a more sustainable urban environment,” said Mayor Tim Dougherty.

TD Green Streets is a component of TD Forests, a North American initiative that helps protect critical forest habitats equal to the amount of paper the bank uses each year. Together, these programs underscore the bank’s commitment to forest protection and stewardship, and are a direct investment in the health of our urban tree canopy.

“TD Bank is proud to award TD Green Streets grants to these municipalities in support of projects that promote innovation in urban forestry in economically disadvantaged areas,” said Joe Doolan, Head of Environmental Affairs for TD Bank.

“As the Human bank, TD believes in giving back to the communities we serve, and our work with the Arbor Day Foundation helps us do that across our footprint.”

“It is a great honor to receive this grant to further our resident’s education and awareness of the importance of trees in our environment.” stated STC Chair Commissioner Kristin Ace.

In 2014, Morristown received designation as a “Tree City USA” by the Arbor Day Foundation and has kept that designation for three years running.

“We are grateful to TD Bank for its commitment to sustainability and support for urban forestry,” said Morris School District Superintendent Mackey Pendergrast.

“Together with the Morristown Shade Tree Commission Morris School District will use this generous grant to plant trees and shrubs at Morristown High School and Lafayette Learning Center Preschool and provide important, hands-on lessons in environmental conservation for our students.”
