Morristown High’s defense of last year’s state hockey crown got off to a good start on Monday, with a 2-0 victory over Howell at Mennen Arena.
The Colonials sealed the win with goals from freshman Conor Critchley and junior captain Nate DeFares, and solid goaltending from Harrison Brown, who stopped 16 shots en route to the shutout.
MHS received an at-large bid to the 2017 NJSIAA/New Jersey Devils Public A Tournament after an 8-10-3 season.
Next up for the 12th-seeded Colonials: Fifth-ranked Livingston, on Feb. 24 at 8:30 p.m. at Mennen Arena, in Morris Township.
If Morristown progresses to the finals, it will enjoy a home-ice advantage.
Scheduling conflicts have moved this year’s finals– usually hosted at Newark’s Prudential Center, home of the New Jersey Devils–to Mennen, on Monday, March 6.
