A “nonspecific threat” believed to be directed at Morristown High School for Monday, Feb. 13, 2017, turned out to be an online prank, Principal Mark Manning said in a letter to parents and students.

Morristown High School“A person of interest was identified and he acknowledged to the police that he is the author of the post and that he meant the comment as a prank,” Manning wrote.

He said he became aware on Saturday afternoon that “a nonspecific threat was made on a social media platform towards a high school, presumed to be Morristown High School,” for Monday.

Morris Township police “have thoroughly investigated this matter and they have determined there is not a credible threat against Morristown High School or any other school in the Morris School District,” said Manning, praising the police.

Details about the prank, the prankster, and any charges were not released. But Manning reminded the school community that online threats are no laughing matter.

Any threat towards student, staff, or property on social media is an “egregious violation of Board of Education Policy and our Code of Conduct. All incidents of this nature will result in the strictest disciplinary measures,” the principal said.

And whether a post is “serious or in jest,” it will be investigated by law enforcement, Manning said.
