THURSDAY, OCT. 13, 2016:

Drew University professor Jonathan Rose presents What News on the Rialto? The Origins of Journalism in the Age of Shakespeare,  at 6 pm in Mead Hall. It’s part of special activities surrounding the free, month-long exhibition of Shakespeare’s First Folio  at the university.

Tamburro Jr. presents 200 Years of Newspapers: ‘Dewey Defeats Truman’ and other Historic Newspapers of the American Presidency, a free talk at 7 pm in the Morristown & Township Library. FRIDAY, OCT. 14:

The  Morristown National Historical Park will unveil the restored Stark’s Brigade Monument, and new Wayside exhibits, at 11 am in Jockey Hollow, in Harding. A half-hour talk about General Stark, his brigade, and the monument will follow the ceremony. Visitors should park at either Jockey Hollow’s New York Brigade parking lot or Trail Center parking lot, and follow the blue trail to the Stark’s Brigade encampment site; the hike is about 25 minutes.  In case of bad weather, please call 973-539-2016 x-210 to confirm if the program will proceed.

morristown craftmarket 2016The Morristown CraftMarket turns 40 this weekend!  Celebrate at a reception from 5 pm to 8 pm, at the Morristown Armory, 430 Western Ave. in Morris Township. Adults (at least 21 years old) may purchase souvenir glasses for $10 with two tickets inside redeemable for two drinks (beer or wine).   The CraftMarket, which supports charities of the Randolph Kiwanis, runs through Sunday and honors a special baby and the hospital that fought to save him.

At 7:30 pm, The Minstrel Open Stage offers an opportunity for acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set, and for the audience to enjoy a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. Ghosts? In George Washington’s Headquarters? At 10 a.m., Gordon Thomas Ward will present  results of a paranormal study completed at the Ford Mansion in Morristown. In the Morristown National Historical Park Auditorium, at 30 Washington Place.  The $15 fee includes all-day admission to the mansion and museum. Pre-register and pre-pay by contacting the  Morris County Tourism Bureau, 973-631-5151.

The Morristown CraftMarket runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and features 150 artists from more than 25 states, showcasing one-of-a-kind and limited edition fine arts and crafts, including jewelry, leather goods, ceramics, metal, glass, wood, furniture, mixed media and wearable fiber. At the Morristown Armory, 430 Western Ave., Morris Township. Admission: $10; weekend pass, $12. Children under 12 with adult, free.  Free parking.

The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey presents Have Fun With Hamlet, a workshop for families and kids ages 6-10, at 10:30 am at the Madison Public Library,  39 Keep St. Call 973-408-5600 to register.

Morristown High School’s 1 p.m. Homecoming football game against Montclair has a special guest star: Olympian Christina Epps.  The 2009 graduate, who competed in the triple jump in Rio, will be honored at halftime, and she will sign autographs after the game.

The First Annual Foote’s Fall Foliage Frolic runs from 4 pm to 6 pm at Foote’s Pond Park, on James Street in Morristown.Family friendly fun includes a hike and refreshments. Hosted by the Friends of Foote’s Pond, a new group dedicated to preserving the waterway.

Drew University professors and students present  Tea & Sonnets — Shakespeare’s sonnets in spoken verse, song and dance — at 5 pm in the Short Stories shop, 23 Main St., Madison.

 

The Jerzey Derby Brigade rolls against the Shore Points in a women’s derby bout at Inline Morristown. Doors open at 6 pm, whistle blows at 7 pm.  Tickets: $10 in advance, $12 at the door. At 38 Dumont Place.

Penny Lopez’  fight against breast cancer has inspired many readers of Morristown Green. From 7 pm to 10 pm at Beyer Ford, Penny will participate in Dancing With the Survivors, a fundraiser for The Pink Fund, which supports breast cancer patients facing financial hardships. Penny is paired with a professional dancer; the evening includes dinner and cocktails. Donation: $40, using promo code DANCENJ.

SUNDAY, OCT. 16:

The Morristown Farmers Market , back for its 26th season, continues every Sunday through Nov. 20 from 8:30 am to 2 pm, in parking lot 10 between Morris and Spring streets.

The Morristown CraftMarket concludes from 10 am to 5 pm at the Morristown Armory in Morris Township. See Saturday entry for details.

The Halloween Half Marathon and Relay starts at 10 am at the corner of Oak Street and Maple Avenue in Morristown, and winds through Chatham and Morris townships before finishing where it began. Halloween costumes are encouraged!   The relay and kids “fun run” are new. See website for more.

Delve into Economic Justice–Market Economy and the Distribution of Goods, at the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship from 12:30 pm to 2 pm. A group study of Thomas Piketty’s Capital in the 21st Century. Free. At 21 Normandy Heights Road, Morris Township.

The Community Soup Kitchen aims to raise $100,000 with its annual Hunger Walk.  It starts outside the soup kitchen at 36 South St., Morristown.  Registration at 1 pm precedes the 1:30 pm walk, with music and refreshments at 2:30 pm. Register here.

whippanyThe First Annual Whippany River History Hike runs from 12:30 pm to 3 pm, starting and ending at Acorn Hall in Morristown with a midway stop at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township. The hike will highlight the history of this waterway. Free, with light refreshments and a documentary, A River’s Journey.  Hike at 1 p.m, rain or shine.  Afterwards, view the Acorn Hall exhibit Fine, Fancy and Fashionable: 125 Years Dressing The Bride, with admission to the museum.  At 68 Lafayette Ave.

Married in white, you chose right? Learn about nuptials through the decades  at the Wedding of the Century Historic Fashion Show, at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morris Township Tours at 1 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm and 4 pm. Cost: $7 per adult, $6 per senior (65+), $5 per child 4 – 16. Children under 4 are FREE. Preregistration required; call 973-285-6550.

For 200 years, the Morristown Green has been the center of public life in town. Celebrate this bicentennial at 2 pm with George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and the Marquis de Lafayette.  Festivities will include music, an exhibit about the history of the Green, and a tree planting–all courtesy of the Morris County Tourism Bureau. Speaking of George Washington… Fatal Sunday tells the story of the Battle of Monmouth. And its author, historian Mark E. Lender, will tell you all about it at 2 pm, in the Washington’s Headquarters Museum Auditorium, at 30 Washington Place, Morristown. Free. Presented by the Morristown National Historical Park and the Schuyler-Hamilton Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Demanding Dignity: Solitary Confinement and the Criminal Justice System is a panel discussion at 2:30 pm, in the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship. State Senators Raymond Lesniak and Sandra Cunningham and a solitary confinement survivor are among the panelists. A replica solitary cell will enable people to experience solitary confinement. Free.
